This weekend is the second and final weekend of the West Austin Studio Tour, and as part of the festivities, Art Alliance Austin is hosting a free public event in Republic Square Park to celebrate the reveal of downtown Austin’s newest piece of public art.
This weekend, downtown Austin will be filled with creamy sweetness, as Republic Square Park plays hosts to the international Gelato World Tour. The international competition stops in eight cities around the globe in search for the best gelato in the world, and has already passed through Dubai, Melbourne, Rome and Valencia.
This week, downtown Austin’s newest restaurant and craft cocktail bar officially opened its doors to the public in the Warehouse District at the corner of 4th and Lavaca. Taking its name from the first cocktail bar in Havana, Cuba, the Pleasant Storage Room brings the elegant and eclectic energy of early to mid-20th century Cuba to the heart of downtown Austin, with rum-inspired cocktails and Caribbean-inspired street food.
Each of the amenity spaces at The Austonian – ranging from a dog grooming room, to a library, or the 55th-floor Austonian Club – were thoughtfully designed to be an extension of Austonian residents’ homes. To this end, The Austonian spent years developing an extensive art collection to warm the walls of the building; thus setting the milieu of the luxury high-rise with over 100 pieces of art in styles ranging from the representational to the abstract.
A quick glance at the Austin skyline is revealing as to the prominence of The Austonian in downtown Austin. Overlooking Lady Bird Lake and Congress Avenue, and towering high above other buildings across the state of Texas, The Austonian is situated in the heart of the city. Zoom in a bit, and The Austonian’s significance increases further; the luxury high-rise serves as the gateway to the hip and happening 2nd Street District, and is home to some of the most celebrated downtown Austin establishments.
