Summer at The Austonian | Downtown Recreation and Activities
Summers in Austin often include venturing outside, enjoying live music and cooling off at well-loved watering holes. Residents of The Austonian enjoy these activities and more thanks to the neighborhood's central location, extended amenities and proximity to popular downtown Austin destinations such as Zilker Park, Republic Square Park, the 2ND Street District and ACL Live at The Moody Theater.
Austin is well-known for live music and music festivals. One of the largest festivals is the ACL Music Festival, held at Zilker Park. In its 11th year, ACL features more than 130 bands and draws crowds of over 65,000 each year. For downtown Austin residents who prefer a more easygoing live music experience in Zilker Park, the annual KGSR concert series Blues on the Green plays on XX nights throughout the summer. This year's line-up includes Charlie Mars, Ben Kweller and Marcia Ball. The Long Center also hosts an outdoor concert called Hartman Foundation's Concert in the Park. For 12 Sundays from June 3 through August 26, 2012, Austin Symphony ensembles will treat concert goers to brass, string, woodwind and big band concerts on the lawn of Hartman Concert Park. Zilker and Hartman Concert Park can be reached by bicycle or on foot via the Lady Bird Lake hike and bike trail, which runs along the Colorado River (one block south of The Austonian).
For residents of The Austonian, summer can be relished on the 10th-floor Lawn, which includes more than 12,000 square feet of outdoor space. A 75-foot saltwater lap pool and neighboring spa provide a place to exercise, relax and cool off. Guests, family and children can gather at The Lawn for a barbeque, pool party or a more sophisticated evening soiree complete with cocktails and a nighttime view of the city. Additional facilities on the 10th floor include a 12-seat movie theater; a game and billiard room; a dog park; four guest suites; and a spa facility, where residents can invite their preferred massage therapist or beauty aesthetician to provide beauty and relaxation services.
Downtown Austin dwellers can peruse local apparel, home and art retailers such as Plain Ivey Jane, BoConcept and mercury design studio in the adjacent 2ND Street District, which extends from Congress westward and includes ACL Live at the Moody Theater, the new home of the legendary Austin City Limits television show. Fine dining can be enjoyed at numerous restaurants in the area, including the award-winning and nationally acclaimed Congress, which is located in the base of The Austonian. Dinner and a movie can also be had right down the street at Violet Crown Cinema, which offers visitors a chance to sample independent films, a full bar and gourmet bites.
Thanks to the innate adventurous spirit and relaxed, friendly demeanor of Austinites, Austin comes alive in the summer. The Austonian allows residents to beat the heat and explore Austin's lively music scene, fun shopping destinations and even squeeze in a dip in the pool set against the city's urban landscape.
