Austin-based Ryan Street & Associates is one of the luxury architecture and design firms selected by The Austonian to develop a number of custom units and floor plans for the downtown luxury high-rise. Ryan Street & Associates possess years of custom single-family home experience, along with extensive experience designing large-scale, resort-style projects. Ryan Street himself translates this expertise to downtown living by creating comfortable and luxurious units that capitalize upon the wrap-around views and open floor plans of The Austonian.

Before opening his own firm in 2001, Ryan Street got his start at the Shiftlet Group, a small Austin-based firm that specializes in high end residential design. Here, Street developed such close working relationships with a number of high-profile clients, and impressed them so much with his design aesthetic, that they encouraged him to branch out on his own, and gave him the projects to do. Since the firm’s founding, Ryan Street & Associates has developed a luxury clientele across the country and has designed custom homes and resort communities across the United States and abroad.

Ryan Street’s style is that of a refined classicism, that takes an edited and refined approach to influences of Neoclassical architecture of the past and recent history. “In architecture and design, there’s always this search for timelessness, for that common architectural thread in history that is always good,” he said. “For me, there’s that sense of drawing from something from the past, but redefining it, updating it, and making it new. And, of course, there’s always that priority of making it more fitting for the place and for the client.”

In his work with The Austonian, Ryan Street has created eight different floor and finish plans for six custom floors in the building. Each unit incorporates his refined classical style; however, across the individual custom homes, the pendulum swings from the more modern to the more classical, with layers, molding, and more classical colors and textures. “What we’re doing for The Austonian is a sort of a cross pollination between a nice, custom home and a really great hotel suite,” he said. “My initial inspiration for The Austonian was The Carlyle hotel in New York – that Beaux Arts neoclassical architecture of turn-of-the-century New York hotels. But also with that refinement, that editing, and the introduction of some modern elements.”

As part of this editing process, Street has incorporated sleek products and materials into the custom units at The Austonian, including more contemporary countertops, tile and stone materials, cabinetry and other elements. Additionally, he’s introduced light, steel-framed doors and windows to the interior spaces of the units to capitalize upon the views provided by The Austonian and to bring additional light into the core of the space. These elements, paired with some surprises up his sleeve, help Street capture the unique qualities of The Austonian, add an element of surprise, and improve the quality of these spaces.
